A double bombing killed at least 49 people in two mosques in New Zealand, Christchurch

A double bombing killed at least 49 people in two mosques in New Zealand, Christchurch. Several assailants simultaneously entered the places of worship, separated by a few kilometers and crowded at the time of the prayer, around 13:40 (local time) this Friday.

New Zealand prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke of a “terrorist attack” that “seems to have been well planned”. While witnesses have reported scenes of horror, there are children among the victims.

What is known about the perpetrators

A first shooter was identified, without knowing whether he was arrested, as an Australian, described by the Australian Prime Minister as “extremist terrorist right, violent”. This is Brenton Tarrant, 28, whose  act was filmed by a video he shot himself.

The exact number of attackers on this attack in Christchurch is still unknown. Mike Bush, a New Zealand police officer, said three other people were arrested in possession of weapons and held in police custody.
New Zealand is in mourning and Jacinda Ardern has evoked one of the “darkest days” in the country’s history.
