Burundi-DR Congo: Security situation on the Burundian-Congolese border is relatively good.

Burundi National Defense Force spokesman (FDNB), Colonel Floribert Biyereke, told the Burundi Press Agency, on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, that the security situation on the border between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is evolving positively.

WHY IT MATTERS: There are regular reports of clashes between militia and DR Congo military on the border of Burundi and Congo, especially in the locality of Uvira in DRC, which borders Burundi. Sometimes, Burundian militias are reported taking parts in these frequent clashes.

The report from the Burundi military defense comes after a group of “armed bandits” from the DRC led an attack on Saturday night in the town of Nyamitanga in Cibitoke province, wounding two soldiers of the Burundian defense forces.

The security situation calmed down among people bordering DR Congo.

Colonel Biyereke reports that the security situation has quickly quietened down and that even the population of Nyamitanga locality and people who live on the border between Burundi and DRC go on normally
with their daily activities.

Biyereke also welcomed the degree of collaboration in security between the population, the police and those responsible for the administration in this bordering province with the DRC.

People urged to report quickly any suspicious situation.

This military authority encourages the people of Cibitoke and other Burundians to alert security officials as quickly as possible, as well as the administration whenever there are unusual elements likely to disturb security.

Colonel Biyereke also welcomes the degree of collaboration between the Burundi defense forces and the DR Congo defense forces in terms of security information exchange.

It is worth mentioning that the Burundi defense forces stationed in Nyamitanga have recovered a rifle
Mid-Kalashnikov type during this attack last Saturday, according to an ABP report.
