Burundi has been voted to be a member of the AU PSC whereas there are some frictions between Gitega and AU following the recent issuance of the international arrests warrants of the suspected perpetrators of the assassination of the Democracy hero in Burundi, Melchior Ndadaye.
The African Union has called for Gitega to ‘bury the hatchet’ and carry on with reconciliation process, instead of ‘digging up the old quarrel’, the AU Commission president, Mussa Faki Mahamat said.
The Peace and Security Council of the AU is a standing decision-making organ of the African Union charged with responsibilities of conducting early warning and preventive diplomacy; facilitate peace-making; establish peace-support operations; and, in certain circumstances, recommend intervention in the Member States to promote peace, security, and stability.
