As the World celebrates the International day of Peace the Burundi Minister of Human Rights has a special message

The Burundi Minister of Human Rights, Social Affairs and Gender, Mr. Martin Nivyabandi held Thursday, September 20, 2018, a press briefing on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Peace on September 21 of each year.

The national theme chosen for this year is “Promoting Peace, Source of Human Dignity and Sustainable Development”. Mr. Nivyabandi said that the day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 in resolution 36/67, which calls on Burundi and the international community to promote and protect peace.

Nivyabandi added that true peace means defending human rights for all, which is why the International Day of Peace is placed under the theme “The right to peace, 70 years after the adoption of the universal declaration of human rights “.

According to the Burundi Minister of Human Rights, the celebration of the International Day of Peace is taking place as peace reigns throughout the country.

During this year, the country organized the elections for the constitutional referendum through peace. Indeed, there is complete tranquility in all parts of the country, the population is engaged in development activities and there is a massive and voluntary return of refugees. It is also happening as Burundi joins other countries in peacekeeping activities, Nivyabandi said.

In addition, according to Nivyabandi, this day is organized just after the closing of the torchbearer caravan, edition 2018, which has passed peacefully in all provinces of the country. Burundi, as a member of the United Nations and part of the various international peace and human rights treaties, joins other nations of the world to celebrate this anniversary day.

He said that the official ceremonies marking this day will take place in Bujumbura Town Hall, Muha commune in Musaga zone, stating that the activities of this day will begin with a march for peace from the monument of the unknown soldier at 8:00 AM.
