Burundi on high preparedness against Ebola outbreak.

Burundi has already set up border detection posts with neighboring countries “detecting the signs “of the Ebola virus disease. According to a Xinhua report, the neighboring countries of Burundi includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), said the  Minister of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS, Dr. Thaddée Ndikumana, at a meeting conference.

The DRC, which shares a border with Burundi in its eastern part, experienced from May 1, 2018, a new outbreak at Ebola Virus Disease(EVD), which originated from the province of Ecuador and progressed to the province of North Kivu bordering Burundi.

Minister Ndikumana also pointed out that in order to deal with any possible outbreak of the EVD that may come from other countries, the Burundian government is soon considering “building and equipping” a national center for the surveillance of diseases with epidemic potential.

Indeed, we have available adequate equipment to make the diagnosis and the suspicion. Currently, one can make the diagnosis of the Ebola virus in Burundi. We also have sites monitoring the entire population entering Burundi to check whether there is one or the other person who has signs of Ebola, “Thadee said.

the Gatumba border with the eastern DRC “with more than 6,000 people
enter Burundi every day “.

Minister Ndikumana took the opportunity to thank the World Health Organization (WHO) and USAID for supporting Burundi in the acquisition of this equipment detecting EVD at points of entry of Burundi with neighboring countries.

This equipment, Thadee explained, will also be used to detect EVD at the port of entry of Bujumbura International Airport.

Burundi also shares a border with Rwanda to the north and with Tanzania to the southeast.
