According to a report published Tuesday in Bujumbura by the Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of Burundi (ISTEEBU) on the inventory of Burundian imports during the 3rd quarter of last year (July, August and September 2017).
Burundian imports from China, despite a decrease of 32.1% in the third quarter of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.The report also notes that compared to the corresponding period in 2016, the structure of the main Burundian import countries has changed slightly in the third quarter of 2017. China remained the largest country of Burundi’s imports, followed by India, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates and France.
On the other hand, countries such as Egypt, Turkey and England appear as new partners of Burundi during the quarter under analysis. Compared with the situation that prevailed in the same period in 2016, Burundian imports in the third quarter of 2017 coming from Asia, America, Asia, Africa and Europe have, according to ISTEEBU increased by 14.4%, 66.4%, 18.8% and 5.9% respectively; while for Oceania, they recorded a drop of 17.7%.
The report also indicates that in the third quarter of 2017, as well as in the same period in 2016, there is a convergence on certain products that keep the first places on the Burundian import charts.The products cited are fuel, medicines, mineral fertilizers, and passenger and other motor vehicles, with their quarterly share in 2017 and 2016 being around 30% of the overall volume of quarterly imports during the last two years. Moreover, the ISTEEBU notes, compared to the same period of 2016, Burundian domestic exports increased by 23.2% in nominal terms. In fact, they rose from 59.5 billion Burundian francs (FBU) in 2016 to 73.3 billion FBU in 2017; a rise mainly due to increased exports of gold, tea, tobacco and beer.
