Membership fees for groups are a major obstacle for young entrepreneurs. Membership fees in different groups ( generally called in Kirundi “amafaranga y’imbuga“) constitute a major challenge that blocks young people in their entrepreneurial activities, according to an expert in entrepreneurship.
Mr. Tharcisse Ndayizeye was speaking Tuesday, December 4, 2018, during a workshop organized by the NGO Word and Action for the awakening of consciousness and change of mentalities (PARCEM) within the framework of the implementation of its Youth project engaged in peacebuilding in Burundi.
In fact, those costs are, in his opinion, likely to exclude a lot of young people who start trading activities or
other forms of income-generating activities.
Mr. Ndayizeye claims that these costs vary according to the professions to be and the location of this craft. He makes it known, by example, that within Burundian country, a new biker has to pay 250,000 BIF to be admitted to the group.
Money collected is not equally used in the same way and in a transparent way. NDAYIZEYE indicates that young people who are looking for entrepreneurship are completely blocked by these expenses.
This expert points out that these costs are not at all recognized by the law in Burundi. He believes that these costs may undermine the initiatives of the Government of Burundi that have already set up for the national employment policy and which is always raising the awareness of young people to create their own employment, through entrepreneurship.
According to NDAYIZEYE, these costs should be lowered and regulated, even if they are profitable both by the one who gives and the group which receives these expenses.
Mr. Ndayizeye believes once again that the media must play a big role in bringing to the fore this problem that is hampering the ambitions of young people.
