Manchester United: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & Marcus Rashford win monthly awards

Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been named Manager of the Month for January, while striker Marcus Rashford has won the EA SPORTS player’s award.

Solskjaer is the first Manchester United manager to receive the award since Sir Alex Ferguson in October 2012 – when they last won the Premier League. He beat Burnley boss Sean Dyche and Southampton counterpart Ralph Hasenhuttl in the voting.

The winner was decided by the votes of the public and a panel of football experts.

Manchester United earned 10 points from 12 available with wins over Newcastle United, Tottenham and Brighton and a draw with Burnley.

Meanwhile, Rashford wins the award after scoring four goals in five appearances in January, including the winner in United’s 1-0 away win over Tottenham.

To claim the prize Rashford saw off competition from his Manchester United team-mate Victor Lindelof as well as Tom Heaton, Joshua King, Alexandre Lacazette and James Ward-Prowse.

“Playing consistently gives you the opportunity to be up for these awards,” said Rashford.

“It’s the first time I’ve won the award and I think only the second time I’ve been up for it, so it’s a good one to win.”

The 21-year-old England international scored three goals in four league games, including winners against Spurs and Brighton.

United have cut the gap to the top four from 11 points to two under Solskjaer.

“We want to move up the table and this is the start of it,” said Solskjaer.

“The more you know the culture of the club, the culture of the players and the way that we have been successful, that has helped me.”

In addition, Solskjaer praised his coaching team, “You cannot be a good leader or a manager without good players, you can’t get results without the players, so ultimately it’s how they respond to what we tell them and they’ve been fantastic, so all credit to them.” He said

Manchester United were unbeaten in January, winning three of their four games against Newcastle, Tottenham, and Brighton, while they were held by Burnley – Solskjaer’s only draw since taking charge.
