The Burundi Senate adopted unanimously the magistrates candidates of the higher courts.

This Monday, Demeber 17, 2018, the Burundi Senate unanimously adopted in its plenary session, the list of the candidate’s magistrates of the higher courts and the public ministry. There were 21 approved candidates, 17 Hutu, and 4 Tutsi, 66% versus 34%, of whom 32% were female and 68% male.

The Minister of Justice, Civil Protection, Aimee Laurentine Kanyana explained to senators that the ministry has proposed these appointments to fill the gaps left by magistrates who have moved elsewhere and to accompany the recent decongestion the courts of appeal, taken by his ministry by setting up the courts of appeal of Muha, Mukaza, Ntahangwa, and Makamba.

According to this ministerial authority, the Bujumbura Court of Appeal had more than 6800 pending cases from the high courts of Bubanza, Muramvya, Mwaro, Cibitoke, Bujumbura Rural, and Bujumbura Town.

With this measure, the Muha Court of Appeal will deal with the affairs of Mwaro and Bujumbura Rural Provinces and Muha Commune.

The one of Mukaza will deal with cases from the Muha commune, the Commercial Court and the Labor Court, at the moment when the Ntahangwa Court of Appeals will handle cases from Ntahangwa Commune, Muramvya Provinces. , Cibitoke and Bubanza.

She hopes that the slowness of the courts which moves some to complain will be reduced.

When asked by senators whether ethnic and gender balances are assured in these nominations, Minister Kanyana explained that the apparent gap will be filled by appointments to be made soon in other institutions of the department.

“Do not worry about balances, it’s a job we do very carefully,” she said, adding that for the women in her ministry, the President of the Republic congratulated them because they register few misconducts and promised to request to be represented at 45% in the high council of the judiciary.
