At least 12 people were killed after a gunman opened fire late Wednesday in a Southern California bar that was hosting a college night, according to multiple news outlets.
Among the 12 people who were killed Wednesday night, includes a sheriff’s deputy.
“We were dancing, and I saw someone walk in, and after that, I just saw the shots go off,” one woman, who wasn’t identified, told Reuters. “We just got down. He was shooting everything from the speakers to anything. We just tried to get out, get behind a car, get behind something. We just tried to take cover. I mean, all we do is kind of sit there and wait and just kind of play dead, I guess.
According to the US media, authorities were first alerted to the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks at 11:20 p.m. The first deputy to arrive on the scene, Ventura County Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year-veteran of law enforcement, was shot and killed upon entering the building.
Eleven others inside the bar were killed in the shooting, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said. The suspect, who has not been identified, was also found dead.
The exact number of casualties was not immediately clear: The AP reported that 13 people had been killed; ABC and CNN, 12. Other details about the shooting were not immediately available.
Between 10 and 15 additional people were injured in the shooting and transported to hospitals, he said.
“There were multiple other victims of different levels of injury at the scene who were taken to local hospitals,” Dean told reporters.
I have been fully briefed on the terrible shooting in California. Law Enforcement and First Responders, together with the FBI, are on scene. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. Likewise, the shooter is dead, along with the first police officer to enter the bar….
